During a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting, António Leitão Amaro responded to statements made earlier by the PS Secretary-General, Pedro Nuno Santos, regarding the perceived threat to the Social Security system under an AD government.
“When political actors lack ideas, words, and solutions, as seems to be the case, false inventions and insinuations abound. Making political debate or starting a campaign by instilling unfounded fears is a great disrespect to voters,” he accused.
The minister argued that the minority PSD/CDS-PP government had implemented measures contrary to such claims, highlighting “the most significant reinforcement of the Social Security fund,” the ordinary increase in pensions, and the payment of an extraordinary supplement to those with lower pensions, in addition to support for beneficiaries of the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly.
“Do not pay attention, do not believe; what we have done is exactly the opposite of these fears (…) To those trying to stir up fears, we say to Portuguese pensioners: do not listen to them, as they have nothing to say,” he stated.
Pedro Nuno Santos made his comments during the opening of the second day of sectoral sessions aimed at updating the PS electoral program for the legislative elections.
“We have a duty to warn about the risks concerning our public pension system, our social security system, one of the most important achievements of our people after April 25, is at risk under an AD government,” said the PS leader.
