
The polls will remain open until 7:00 PM. In the Azores, they will open and close 60 minutes after the polling stations on the mainland and Madeira, due to the one-hour time difference.
More than 9.3 million voters are eligible to participate in these municipal elections, according to registration data provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).
Out of the 9,303,840 registered voters, 9,262,722 are nationals. The remaining voters include 18,319 from the European Union (EU) and 22,799 from outside the EU, both groups are registered in national territory.
Voters will elect the governing bodies of 308 Municipal Chambers, 308 Municipal Assemblies, and 3,221 Parish Assemblies, thus requiring three separate ballots.
An additional 37 parishes will elect their executive bodies in citizen assemblies due to having up to 150 voters.
Following these elections, 302 parishes, which were merged or abolished during the 2013 administrative reform, will be restored. This process will dismantle 135 parish unions.
The country will then have a total of 3,258 parishes (Corvo is the only municipality without a Parish Council, with its responsibilities assumed by the Municipal Chamber).
In total, 1,584 lists from parties, coalitions, and citizen groups are competing for Municipal Chambers, 1,519 for Municipal Assemblies, and 9,764 lists for Parish Assemblies, according to the most updated data from the General Secretariat of the MAI.
