Polls have also opened in the Azores at 8:00 a.m. local time.

The polls will close at 7:00 PM local time on the nine islands of the archipelago, which corresponds to 8:00 PM in mainland Portugal and Madeira.

More than 9.3 million voters are eligible to participate in these municipal elections, according to the voter registration data made available by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).

Out of the 9,303,840 registered voters, 9,262,722 are nationals, while the remaining consist of 18,319 EU foreign nationals and 22,799 non-EU foreign nationals, all registered on national territory.

The voters will elect the governing bodies of 308 Municipal Chambers and 308 Municipal Assemblies (11 of which are in Madeira and 19 in the Azores), alongside 3,221 Parish Assemblies, resulting in three different ballots being used.

An additional 37 parishes will select their executives through citizen plenaries, as they have up to 150 voters.

This election will reinstate 302 parishes that were merged or dissolved by the administrative reform of 2013, thereby disbanding 135 parish unions.

As a result, the country will have 3,258 parishes (Corvo being the only municipality without a Parish Board, with its duties being handled by the Municipal Chamber).

A total of 1,584 lists from parties, coalitions, and citizen groups are contesting the Municipal Chambers, 1,519 are contesting the Municipal Assemblies, and 9,764 lists are running for Parish Assemblies, based on the most updated data from the General Secretariat of the MAI.
