Security cameras have yet to be installed at Ponta Delgada Prison, as part of a plan to upgrade the facility’s existing systems. The project involves the installation of a total of 99 cameras, according to a document available on the BASE portal, where public contracts are published. The contract for this installation was signed on July 24, with the new surveillance system costing 17,632.00 euros.
The Directorate-General for Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP) noted that installing and maintaining CCTV cameras across various prisons is an ongoing task.
In April, a report on the execution of a security enhancement plan for prisons highlighted the strengthening of surveillance systems, which includes implementing new systems in several facilities.
Following the escape of five inmates from Vale de Judeus Prison on September 7 of last year, the topic of surveillance systems was extensively debated. The Ministry of Justice confirmed in April that the DGRSP is in the process of installing new surveillance systems in some prisons and enhancing existing ones in others.
