A Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has arrested a second suspect linked to robberies that ‘spread terror’ in public spaces and night entertainment venues in Portimão, Faro district, from the end of last year until April this year.
The arrest involves a 25-year-old man, taken into custody outside a flagrante delicto scenario, with assistance from the Portimão Public Security Police (PSP) following another arrest.
The first arrest in this context occurred on Sunday and was announced on Monday by the PJ. The other suspect, a 27-year-old man, “has already begun questioning,” confirmed the PJ.
Regarding the latest detainee, investigators noted that “the suspect, in co-authorship, approached victims and, under firearm threat, robbed them of money and other goods, fleeing immediately afterwards.”
“So far, seven victims have been identified,” emphasized the PJ.
The suspect will be brought before a judicial interrogation for the application of appropriate coercive measures and is suspected of crimes of qualified robbery, illegal weapon possession, qualified bodily harm, and attempted extortion.
On Monday, the PJ had reported suspicions during the time of these violent robberies that the crimes might be committed in co-authorship. In one incident, a victim was shot in the knee, sustaining “serious injuries, whose consequences were not more severe due to the low caliber of the fired ammunition.”
The inquiry is led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Portimão.
