A public tender announced today in the Diário da República reveals a budget of 602,800 euros allocated for the construction of the Asprela – Campanhã cycle path.
The contract is set for completion within a year, and interested parties have until May 1st to submit proposals for the development of the cycle lane.
The cycle path was originally intended to connect Asprela with Baguim do Monte (Gondomar), but the two municipalities withdrew from the project, leaving only the portion in Porto, which is now open for bidding.
The initially proposed cycle path, which was to pass through Rio Tinto, was estimated to cost 970,000 euros, with a subsidy of 728,000 euros from the Environmental Fund. However, this support was subsequently lost.
Last November, a source from the city council told Porto Canal that “the lack of cycle paths in the city is one of the main concerns for Porto residents.”
In November 2021, the municipalities of Porto, Matosinhos, and Gondomar received approval from the Environmental Fund for cycle lane connections on two routes, adding approximately 14 kilometers to the metropolitan network, with a total investment of 2.7 million euros.
By March 2023, Porto City Council anticipated that the network of cycle paths connecting Porto, Matosinhos, and Gondomar would be completed by 2025, the current year.
The investments have not yet been realized.
