Among a global list of 112 cities ranked for leadership and environmental transparency, the 48 European cities that make up the 2024 A List—which includes Lisbon, Porto, and the municipalities of Guimarães and Matosinhos—represent the largest number from any region worldwide, accounting for 43% of the total, states the organization in a release.
In 2024, there are 48 European cities nominated from 11 countries, including Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom, with five new environmental leaders from Europe featured for the first time: Matosinhos (Portugal), Fredensborg (Denmark), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Glasgow and South Gloucestershire (United Kingdom).
The 48 European cities reflect a diversity of urban centers, ranging from small municipalities to capitals, including Paris (France), Porto (Portugal), Florence (Italy), Heidelberg (Germany), Malmö (Sweden), and Glasgow (United Kingdom).
The list is managed by the “Disclosure Insight Action” or “Carbon Disclosure Project – CDP,” a nonprofit organization that runs the global environmental disclosure system for businesses, cities, states, and regions.
“The cities, states, and regions in the CDP’s 2024 A List are setting the global benchmark in environmental leadership,” stated Hanah Paik, CDP’s Director for Cities, States, and Regions, in a statement.
As the founders of environmental reporting, CDP champions transparency and the power of data to drive change, collaborating with leaders in business, capital, policy, and science to bring forth information that enables positive decisions for the planet.
