“According to provisional data from port authorities, the Portuguese mainland port system recorded an overall growth of 6% in total cargo volume in 2024, reaching 88 million tons compared to 82.8 million tons in 2023,” stated the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing in a press release.
During the period under review, general breakbulk cargo rose 3%, surpassing 5.7 million tons, containerized general cargo increased by 11% to over 37 million tons, and roll-on roll-off cargo saw a 2% rise.
Meanwhile, liquid bulk grew by 7% to nearly 30 million tons, while solid bulk experienced a decline, which the Government did not specify.
The growth recorded in 2024 was mainly driven by the performance of the Port of Sines, which progressed 11%, bolstered by increased traffic on the Cape route.
In 2024, Sines accounted for 54% (47.8 million tons) of the cargo handled.
During this period, container movements advanced by 11% to 3.3 million TEU (a standard unit equivalent to the space occupied by a container approximately 6.1 meters long).
