The recent 54% increase in Portugal’s contribution marks a significant boost in national investment in this international organization, highlighting the country’s commitment to advancing Global Health, according to a joint statement from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The government aims to strengthen vaccination programs, particularly in Portuguese-speaking African countries, to prevent diseases and enhance health systems, which aligns with goals for sustainable development and health care access equity.

Portugal’s government emphasized the importance of the initiative within the broader strategy to strengthen international partnerships that help reduce health inequalities, underlining the crucial role played by Gavi.

The Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, indicated that this contribution is a significant step towards enhancing sustainability, equity, and access to health care globally.

“It also promotes essential work in disease prevention and the strengthening of health systems,” she emphasized in the press release.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, highlighted the strategic importance for Portugal in supporting the strengthening of international mechanisms and organizations that work for collective well-being and the protection of global health.

José Manuel Durão Barroso, Chairman of the Gavi Board, expressed gratitude for Portugal’s commitment to the initiative.

“This support, a 54% increase from previous contributions, is a testament to Portugal’s dedication to health equity and its vision for a fairer and healthier world,” remarked the former Portuguese Prime Minister.

The government further noted that the vaccine alliance has remained adaptable over 25 years, swiftly addressing countries’ needs and global emergencies while maintaining impact, efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.
