Portugal and Cape Verde will cooperate in the preservation of film heritage

A cooperation protocol aimed at strengthening and promoting the conservation, knowledge, and access to the film heritage produced or shot in Cape Verde throughout its history is set to be signed on Wednesday, as announced by the Portuguese Cinematheque.

The signing will take place at the National Archive of Moving Images in Loures, a facility belonging to the Cinematheque, with participation and remarks by the Portuguese Minister of Culture, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, and her Cape Verdean counterpart, Augusto Veiga.

Established in 1988, the National Historical Archive of Cape Verde is tasked with safeguarding the country’s documentary historical and patrimonial collection, according to its official webpage.

Restructured in 2020 and renamed as the National Historical Archive Institute of Cape Verde, the archive’s mission includes inventorying, conserving, restoring, digitizing, storing, and disseminating its collections, or at least the most significant ones, by 2030.

The cooperation agreement will be signed by the director of the Portuguese Cinematheque, Rui Machado, and the director of the National Historical Archive Institute of Cape Verde, José Tavares.
