Maria da Graça Carvalho expressed that the country will attend COP30 in Belém, Brazil, with the expectation of achieving “very concrete results” in various areas, particularly in mitigation and also in adaptation to climate change.
The minister spoke during an initiative hosted by the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon, entitled “Get2COP30 — Rumo à Amazónia,” in reference to the summit, which is set to take place from November 10 to 21, with a leaders’ summit on November 6 and 7.
Maria da Graça Carvalho highlighted the significance of Brazil emphasizing a just transition, including in international cooperation, and recalled national initiatives like the debt conversion for sustainable development projects, notably in Cape Verde.
“We want to reinforce cooperation around common objectives,” she said, noting that the debt initiative could contribute to reducing Portugal’s emissions by up to 3%, but emphasizing that the government already pursued this before it was possible.
During the ceremony, the Brazilian ambassador to Portugal, Raimundo Silva, emphasized that COP30 is the first UN climate summit to take place in a Portuguese-speaking country and will be “a unique opportunity” for the Lusophone community to showcase their concrete actions in the climate fight to the world.
“We want COP30 to be a true milestone in the fight against climate change,” said the ambassador.
