Portugal creates a national network of clinical centers dedicated to Parkinson’s disease

The Network of Clinical and Research Centers in Parkinson’s Disease and Other Movement Disorders in Portugal (PARKMOV-PT), a unit of the Portuguese Society of Movement Disorders (SPDMOV), is coordinated by Dr. Joaquim Ferreira and includes 22 hospitals, clinical and research centers, and higher education institutions across the country, from north to south, revealed Joana Damásio, the president of SPDMOV.

One of the objectives of this network is to contribute to a more integrated and specialized healthcare system, facilitating access to innovative treatments, she explained.

PARKMOV-PT aims to foster collaborative research, knowledge sharing, and the continuous improvement of patient care, Joana Damásio added.

Through this network, the Portuguese Society of Movement Disorders intends to increase scientific research, boost the number of clinical trials conducted in Portugal, and ensure patient access to new innovative treatments, she emphasized.

Improving early and accurate diagnosis, enabling more effective disease management, as well as fostering specialized training for healthcare professionals to ensure that doctors and therapists are up-to-date with the latest scientific discoveries and best clinical practices, are among other goals.

In addition, PARKMOV-PT aspires to strengthen collaboration between clinical centers and researchers, ensuring a joint effort to maintain better treatment standards, support the creation of new specialized centers, enhance national coverage of units dedicated to managing movement disorders, and empower multidisciplinary teams to conduct clinical studies and implement innovative therapeutic approaches.
