Prime Minister António Costa announced today that Portugal has endorsed the security guarantees given to Ukraine by the G7 countries, noting that it will still be discussed how the country can help to ensure them.

“The declaration now opens a period from which contacts will begin between the partners to define the extent to which each will participate in Ukraine’s future security guarantees,” the prime minister told reporters at the end of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Vilnius.

Asked about the type of support Portugal is available to provide, António Costa replied that “it is premature” to talk about it.

“We have tried to contribute to the security of Ukraine in the most diverse ways, we have done it from the military point of view, from the financial point of view, political, diplomatic, also from the point of view of the provision of equipment and through training, namely now of F-16 pilots,” he added.
