Portugal has 330 varieties of fruit trees, mainly apple trees.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Sea has cataloged a total of 330 varieties in its latest registry, designed to ensure quality, authenticity, and traceability of species. Of these, 324 are suitable for fruit production, three are identified for use as rootstocks, and three have dual suitability for both fruit production and as rootstocks.

Leading the registry is the apple tree with 139 varieties, including well-known types like focinho de burro, falso bravo, padre Inácio um, porqueira, porta da loja, and olho-de-boi.

Following the apple tree, the olive tree is cataloged with 65 varieties, such as bico de corvo, cordovil macho, gulosinha, verde verdelho, and linguiçeira.

Next are the pear tree with 28 varieties—featuring bela feia, bonita, sete cotovelos, and dona Joaquina—alongside the chestnut tree, with 26 varieties including demanda, misericórdia, Boaventura, and benfeita.

The fig tree is documented with 16 varieties, and the almond tree with 12 varieties.

Other fruit trees in the registry include the cherry tree (seven varieties), the orange tree (six), strawberry plant (five), sour cherry tree (five), plum tree (five), hybrid chestnut tree (three), custard apple tree (two), and quince tree (two).

With only a single variety registered are the avocado tree (jordana), hazelnut tree (grada de Viseu), citron tree (madeira), lemon tree (galego), mandarin tree (carvalhais), tangerine tree (setubalense), persimmon tree (coroa de rei), Madeira blueberry (uveira da serra), and walnut tree (rego).

The registration of these fruit varieties ensures they meet specific standards, such as being distinct, sufficiently homogeneous, stable, and intended for fruit production or as rootstocks. Each registered variety has an appointed person responsible for its selection and maintenance.

Twelve proponents and an equal number of maintainers oversee these varieties.
