The Portuguese fleet has already used 80% of its horse mackerel quota and it may be necessary to close these catches, the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM) warned today.

“For all due purposes and considering the data on horse mackerel catches made by the Portuguese fleet in sub-area 8C, it is reported that quota utilization has reached 80%,” reads a note from the DGRM.

Sub-area 8C corresponds to the southern Bay of Biscay.

Given this scenario, the DGRM has warned that horse mackerel fishing could be closed.

The DGRM is a central service of the State’s direct administration, with administrative autonomy, whose objective is the development of maritime safety and services, the implementation of fisheries policies and the preservation of resources.
