Portugal “in solidarity” with victims of “deplorable attack” at synagogue

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, stated on Thursday that “Portugal stands in solidarity with the families of the victims of the deplorable attack” near a synagogue in Manchester, United Kingdom.

“Portugal stands in solidarity with the families of the victims of the deplorable attack near a synagogue in Manchester, United Kingdom”, highlighted the Prime Minister on the social network X. “The fight against intolerance must mobilize us all.”

Montenegro added that he offered “full support” to his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, during a meeting this morning in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The attack, already classified as a terrorist act by the British police, resulted in two deaths and three injuries during the Yom Kippur celebrations, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

According to the Greater Manchester Police, a man drove a car into worshippers at the gates of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall before stabbing them.

The suspect was ultimately shot dead by police, who delayed confirming his death due to fears that he was carrying explosives, and two other individuals were detained, revealed Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor.

The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, returned urgently from the European summit in Copenhagen to lead the Government’s emergency committee, promising increased police presence near synagogues across the country.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed being “deeply shocked and saddened” by the attack, coinciding with a time of high attendance at synagogues.

The United Kingdom has seen a rise in antisemitic incidents since the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
