“Portugal is a poor country and cannot afford to be governed like this”

Socialist Sérgio Sousa Pinto emphasized the necessity of “democratic loyalty” between the Socialist Party (PS) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) for effective governance in Portugal.

“The core issue at stake for the country is this: without constructive dialogue and democratic loyalty between the PS and PSD, the country is ungovernable. This is the essential issue”, he stated during his commentary on CNN Portugal, highlighting: “A country that does not ensure governability cannot develop long-term policies.”

Noting that it is not just about quickly going to “elections,” Sérgio Sousa Pinto pointed out that the lack of dialogue traps the country in “the calendar and immediacy.” “It is a country of short-term policy-making focused on votes. Unfortunately, Portugal is a poor country and cannot afford to be governed in this manner”, he argued.

These statements followed his comments on the performance of Luís Montenegro and his declarations: “What he said yesterday is not what he says today, and what he says today will certainly not be what he says tomorrow”, he remarked.

And Madeira?

During the same commentary, the socialist also discussed the elections in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which resulted in a victory for the PSD, pushing the PS to third place, with Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) occupying second place.

“The PS is not strategically directed by decisions made by the leadership of Chega. The decision [to vote in favor of the motion of censure] was aberrant and this aberrant decision led to an aberrant result, which is this: the PS is in third place in Madeira, behind a party called JPP, with 15% of the votes, which, from a historical perspective, is a result incompatible with the expectations of a founding party of the regime and a governing party like the PS”, he explained, reinforcing that the socialists’ vote in favor of the motion, which brought down the government, was “a political mistake,” he emphasized.
