The PSD Member of European Parliament Sebastião Bugalho responded to a statement by the candidate for the PS secretary-general and former Minister of Internal Administration José Luís Carneiro with criticism towards the party.
Following Carneiro’s assertion that “today Portugal is more secure in the regulation of its borders,” Bugalho agreed: “It’s not a lie,” and added, “since they left the Government.”
“‘Yes, today Portugal is more secure in the regulation of its borders,’ says the new PS leader. And it’s not a lie. Since they left the Government,” Bugalho wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“Sim, hoje Portugal está mais seguro na regulação das suas fronteiras”, diz o novo líder do PS. E não é mentira. Desde que saíram do governo.

Last month, new border control systems were installed at airports and seaports, aimed at allowing “more rigorous and efficient management” of citizens’ entry and exit in the Schengen area.
In a joint statement by all entities involved, the Internal Security System (SSI), through the Border and Foreign Coordination Unit—established within the SSI after the dissolution of the Foreigners and Borders Service—stated that Portugal is entering “a new era in border management” with the implementation of the new control systems.
According to the Internal Security System, passengers can follow the process through the digital channels of the involved entities—SIS, PSP, GNR, AIMA, ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, MNE—as well as information provided at terminals.
