Portugal is the 6th country in Europe with the most cases of mpox between 2022-2025

According to a report published jointly by the ECDC and the European regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO), Portugal recorded 1,221 cases of the disease formerly known as monkeypox during the specified period. Portugal trailed Spain (8,632 cases), France (4,430), Germany (4,236), the United Kingdom (4,215), and the Netherlands (1,464).

Italy also reported over a thousand cases, with 1,148 confirmed infections. This data encompasses the 27 European Union member states as well as the three other countries within the European Economic Area (EEA): Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Over the past three months, 713 cases of mpox were reported across 24 countries and regions, while in the last four weeks, 289 cases were identified in 18 countries and regions.

During these periods, Portugal reported 11 and seven cases, respectively. In comparison, Germany identified 146 and 77 cases, Spain 151 and 47, France 47 and 25, and Italy 61 and 25.

Data from Portugal’s Directorate-General of Health, as of December last year, indicated three outbreaks with two fatalities since May 2022.

The European report additionally notes that from March 7, 2022, to April 14, 2025, a total of 29,607 mpox cases were identified in 47 countries and regions within the WHO European Region. Data for 29,455 cases in 43 countries and regions were reported to the ECDC and WHO Europe via the European Surveillance System (TESSy), with 0.65% classified as “probable cases.”

The majority of cases were male (98%), and the most affected age group was 31 to 40 years, accounting for 40% of cases.
