“Portugal is the first interested in the appreciation of firefighters”

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa addressed journalists following the solemn session commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Lisbon Central Mosque. He was queried about the significance of the 45th Congress of the Portuguese Firefighters League, taking place this weekend in Alcobaça, Leiria district.

“The primary beneficiary of the enhancement of firefighters is Portugal, the Portuguese people, the Portuguese society, the Portuguese State, and the municipalities. That’s why the congress is also important,” he advocated.

President Marcelo emphasized that besides being an elective event, the congress serves as an opportunity for firefighters to reflect, describing them as an “essential component of Portuguese society.”

“It is a vital congress because firefighters believe in preparing for the upcoming fire season in advance and have proposals regarding their statute and role. It is in the winter, now, when preparations for the spring, summer, and fall of the next year are made,” he stated, underscoring the importance of attending the event “with great interest.”

António Nunes, President of the Portuguese Firefighters League, highlighted that the Congress should signify a turning point for the sector, demanding career recognition and the dignification of associations.

“The mission of Portuguese firefighters is too noble to be held hostage by constraints or indifference,” declared António Nunes during the opening speech of the 45th National Congress of the LBP.

The LBP is pushing for measures concerning the financial support for corporations, career advancement, and volunteer support, topics prominently featured in the 16 motions to be debated over the two-day congress, gathering leaders from humanitarian associations across the country.

Dubbed “the congress of affirmation,” the meeting may result in decisions to stage protests, potentially including street demonstrations near government authorities, helmet deposits on the steps of the Portuguese Parliament, and a blockade where firefighters briefly refrain from responding to incidents.

The League comprises 436 humanitarian firefighter associations nationwide.
