The target, originally set for 2026 under the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNEC), includes a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
“We have recorded very positive results in the first months of this year,” stated Maria da Graça Carvalho, on the sidelines of the II Energy Conference of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
The increase in hydro and wind energy has been crucial, leading the minister to consider it “very likely that this year, Portugal will reach that target initially set for 2026.”
In 2024, renewable sources accounted for 71% of the electricity consumed – the highest value ever – with hydro energy (28%), wind energy (27%), solar photovoltaic (10%), and biomass (6%) leading the way.
Electricity produced from non-renewable sources, primarily natural gas, accounted for only 10% of consumption, while the rest was supplied by imports, which reached a record 10.5 TWh.
