Portugal receives European funding for 12,000 homes

An agreement formalizing the first tranche of 450 million euros, part of a total 1.34 billion euros credit line, was signed today at the official residence of the Prime Minister in Lisbon.

The government announced that this credit line with the European Investment Bank (EIB) extends the deadline for municipalities to provide housing solutions to 2030, compared to the June 2026 deadline under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. It offers more favorable conditions, with lower interest rates and more generous grace periods.

The government also mentioned a developing EIB financing line to support the implementation of the 1st Right Housing Access Support Program.

In statements without questions from journalists following the agreement’s signing, Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, expressed gratitude to the EIB for its role in Portugal’s development.

Ioannis Tsakiris, Vice President of the EIB, described today’s agreement as “historic” and a “declaration of confidence” from the European Union in Portugal.

Tsakiris stated that the agreement is “a milestone for Portugal and also for Europe” because “housing is not a peripheral issue, it is central.”

“Affordable housing means stability for families, opportunities for young people, and fairness for communities, but it also means competitiveness for our economies and progress towards climate goals. When workers cannot live near their jobs, when students cannot find a place to study, when families cannot afford energy bills, we all lose, Europe is losing,” he emphasized.
