The European Commission stated that a request to activate the European Civil Protection Mechanism has not yet been made. However, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) requested satellite images for the fires affecting the municipalities of Arouca in the Aveiro district and Ponte da Barca in the Viana do Castelo district.
Approximately three thousand security and rescue personnel were mobilized today to combat the flames in various districts. The rural fire in Arouca, which began on Monday and spread to the municipality of Castelo de Paiva, commands the most resources with over 770 personnel.
In Ponte da Barca, the fire, active since Saturday in the Peneda-Gerês National Park area, involved nearly 400 personnel and spread in the morning to the municipality of Terras de Bouro in the Braga district.
The Secretary of State for Civil Protection, Rui Rocha, announced today that the government is ensuring the availability of 76 aerial resources. He emphasized that the effectiveness of these resources depends on the characteristics of the fires.
Significant portions of the northern interior and central regions of the country are at maximum risk for rural fires, according to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The forecast primarily concerns the municipalities within the districts of Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, and Santarém.
According to IPMA, this maximum fire risk situation is expected to continue in the coming days in the same regions, worsening in some municipalities of the Algarve.
