The announcement was made today on social media by Ambassador Rita Laranjinha, the special envoy for Africa in support of Portugal’s candidacy.
The diplomat was received today by the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, to whom she conveyed Portugal’s desire to gain the support of Guinea-Bissau’s authorities.
“It was agreed that Guinea-Bissau, also a candidate for the same biennium, 2027-2028, will naturally have the support of Portugal,” emphasized Rita Laranjinha.
The Portuguese diplomat stressed that mutual support among Lusophone countries is “normal” in such candidacies.
Rita Laranjinha also highlighted the “enormous kindness” of Sissoco Embalo in receiving her and providing “some advice” on how to develop the candidacy with African countries.
The election for the non-permanent member seat on the United Nations Security Council is set for June 2026.
