The Portuguese government is set to demand explanations from the Russian authorities following the violation of Polish airspace by Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) early Wednesday morning.
With the Russian ambassador currently away from Portugal, the Russian embassy’s chargé d’affaires in Lisbon will act as his representative.
Polish authorities, describing the incident as a “major provocation” by Russia, reported that 19 drones had entered Polish airspace, with some being shot down.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk invoked Article 4 of NATO, which provides for consultations among member states.
Moscow claimed it did not intend to violate Russian airspace.
The incident was widely condemned by NATO and European Union countries.
Poland has also requested an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting, which is expected to take place on Friday.
