Portugal supports electoral process in Guinea-Bissau

Portugal will send about 16 tons of electoral material to Guinea-Bissau, this Tuesday, for the legislative elections to be held next June 4th.

The provision of this material is made under the Electoral Cooperation between Portugal – through the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Internal Administration – and Guinea-Bissau, and the transport is ensured by a civilian flight also supported by the Portuguese State.

The Portuguese contribution includes ballot papers, constituent and tabulation minutes, ballot dump sheets, voter lists, protest and complaint forms, among other material needed for the elections, which will be delivered to the Guinean authorities by the Portuguese ambassador in Bissau.

In addition to this support for the electoral process, which totals 290 thousand Euros, Portugal will add an additional contribution of 250 thousand Euros. Both contributions are part of the international efforts that have been undertaken by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

It should also be recalled that at the request of the Guinea-Bissau authorities, Portugal had made available an extraordinary amount of 5 million euros for Guinea-Bissau’s General State Budget at the end of 2022, to deal with the worsening international economic and financial situation, with a view to reinforcing Portuguese Cooperation support in the areas of education and health, as well as to strengthening democracy, particularly by supporting electoral processes.

Portugal recognizes the importance of the legislative elections on June 4 in Guinea-Bissau for the political life and development of the country.
