Portugal tries today, in Reykjavik, against Iceland, to escape at the top of Group J and get closer to the Euro2024 soccer, in the meeting that will mark the internationalization 200 of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The captain will be a starter at the Laugardalsvöllur Stadium, as announced on Monday by the selector Roberto Martinez himself, in a match in which Portugal seeks its fourth win in the grouping and to continue fully victorious on the way to the next European Championship.
After ‘dispatching’ on Saturday Bosnia-Herzegovina (3-0) in Lisbon’s Estádio da Luz, the national team will experience only its third ever duel with the Icelanders, the second in Reykjavik, after the 3-1 triumph in October 2010, in Euro2012 qualification, also at Laugardalsvöllur Stadium.
This is the first meeting between the two nations since the final round of Euro2016, which Portugal would go on to win, with a draw (1-1) recorded in the opening game of the two teams in the competition held in France.
The Iceland-Portugal match, from the fourth round of Group J qualifying for Euro2024, is scheduled for 19:45 (18:45 local time) and will be refereed by German Daniel Siebert.
The team of the ‘quinas’ leads the group with nine points, followed by Slovakia, which has seven, and Luxembourg, third, with four. Bosnia and Iceland follow with three, in fourth and fifth places, respectively, while Liechtenstein is last, without points.
Only the top two finishers in the grouping qualify for the final stage of Euro2024, which will be held in Germany.
