The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, said today that he “welcomes” Palestine acquiring full membership of the United Nations, reiterating his defense of the two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, to the conflict in the Middle East.
“Successive Portuguese governments have supported the adoption of the two-state solution in international organizations, particularly the United Nations. I would like to add that the Portuguese government maintains this position and even add that we welcome Palestine’s desire to acquire full member status in the United Nations, which goes beyond the observer status it currently has,” said the head of the executive, during a debate in the Portuguese Parliament on next week’s extraordinary European Council.
“It’s a way of signalling that it’s worth promoting understanding, negotiation, combining interests within all international organizations in order to have a lasting peace,” said Luís Montenegro, responding to a question from the Left Bloc on whether Portugal will recognize the State of Palestine.
