A cooperation protocol aimed at valuing and preserving Lusophone-Brazilian tile heritage was signed on Wednesday by MMP, the Instituto Pedra, and the Fundação Municipal de Património Histórico de São Luís do Maranhão (FUMPH).
The key objective of this protocol is to support the establishment of the Museu do Azulejo in a historic mansion, an exceptional example of Lusophone-Brazilian architecture, located in the historic center of São Luís in northeastern Brazil.
This agreement sees Portugal committing to provide technical, documentary, curatorial, and training support for the museum’s establishment. Additionally, pieces from the MMP’s collection will be loaned for a future long-term exhibition.
The Portuguese public entity responsible for managing museums and monuments stated that this Luso-Brazilian agreement also includes the organization of exhibitions, conferences, colloquiums, visits, publications, and scientific and cultural promotional activities in both countries.
The cooperation protocol was formalized through the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, which is part of the MMP network.
São Luís’s historic center, located on the island of São Luís do Maranhão, which bears significant Portuguese colonial influence, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site in 1997 and features numerous buildings adorned with Portuguese tile facades.
