Portugal will “very soon” be independent from Russian gas imports.

“We have set the goal of eliminating any imports of gas from Russia. We are in a position to say that this is possible,” stated the Prime Minister during a parliamentary debate concerning the European Council meeting on December 18 and 19.

Currently, Montenegro mentioned there is “only one importer with a long-term contract still active” and this year “had three loads.”

“Very soon, we believe there will be conditions for us to become completely independent from any Russian gas supply,” Montenegro emphasized, in response to a question from the liberal bench.

“It’s not an obligation we are bound to, but a choice we have made,” he clarified.

The European Union (EU) reached an agreement on Wednesday to ban all Russian gas imports by the autumn of 2027.

This agreement was reached between the European Parliament, which sought a quicker ban, and the Member States, which wanted a bit more time.

Almost four years after the invasion of Ukraine, the European Union aims to deprive Russia of the financial revenue from gas.

The share of Russian gas in the European Union’s gas imports decreased from 45% in 2021 to 19% in 2024.
