INE data shows the number of deaths also increased in the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2023.
In April this year there were 9,519 deaths, an increase of 3.1% compared to the same month in 2023, when there were 9,236 deaths, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), released this Friday.
According to INE’s monthly data on mortality, births and nuptials, there were 9,519 deaths in April 2024, 283 more than in the same month last year, which represents an increase of 3.1%.
In addition, the number of deaths due to Covid-19 “increased to 20 (5 more than in March 2024), representing 0.2% of all deaths”.
However, this figure is lower than that recorded in March 2024, when there were 1,039 fewer deaths, representing a decrease of 9.8%.
According to INE, there were 42,721 deaths in the first four months of the year, “higher than the figure recorded in the same period of 2023 (105 more deaths). This figure represents an increase of 0.2%.
In March 2024, 6,770 babies were born alive, “a figure that was up 9.1% on February 2024 (6,204), but down 4.3% on March 2023 (7,071)”.
That month, the natural balance (the difference between the number of live births and the number of deaths in a given period) worsened. In March, the balance was -3,772, “slightly worse than in the same month in 2023, when it was -3,489”.
INE’s Vital Statistics also reveal that the number of marriages celebrated in March 2024 fell by 2.1% compared to March 2023.
“In March 2024, 1,951 marriages were celebrated, which corresponds to an increase of 36.9% compared to the number of marriages performed in February 2024 (526 more marriages), but a decrease of 2.1% compared to March 2023 (41 fewer),” the data indicates.
