The so-called “biggest cheese in Portugal” was consumed this Sunday in Rabaçal. With 40 kilos of weight, it needed 500 liters of milk and a curing of more than two months to be in the point.
The presentation of the cheese took place during the 12th edition of the Rabaçal and Roman Cheese Market that took place in the Archaeological Site of the Roman Villa of Rabaçal. To mark the achievement, the Union of Parishes of São Miguel, Santa Eufémia and Rabaçal promoted a parade of Roman times in charge of elements linked to Vivarte.
Carried by four elements, the cheese was presented to all visitors of the fair and, especially, to the elements of the Associação de Caminheiros de Penela who, after a walk through the Rabaçal area, had the opportunity to taste this product. In between there was still time for the usual photo with the official guests of the market and the members of the Confraternity of Rabaçal Cheese near the ruins of the old house of a noble Roman family.
The symbolic cutting of the cheese was made by Maria Marmé, president of the Union of Parishes, and Eduardo Santos, mayor of Penela. Then, some elements linked to the Confraternity of Rabaçal Cheese did the rest of the service – they cut the cheese into small pieces. To accompany this cheese, baskets with bread and broa (cornbread) made by a local bakery were placed on the table.
