The four Portuguese men accused of raping two young women in El Carmen, Gijón, Spain, in July 2021, have been acquitted on Friday, November 21, by the Eighth Section of the Provincial Court.
The verdict, which has not yet been officially released, was announced this morning by Defense Attorney Germán Inclán.
The group had been accused of raping two Spanish women after a night of entertainment in the summer of 2021 in Gijón.
The alleged victims assured authorities that the four men from Braga, aged between 22 and 26, had forced them to have sexual relations in the room of a guesthouse in Gijón, where the Portuguese were vacationing.
Two of the four young men were held in pre-trial detention for two months but were eventually released on bail. The suspects, who have maintained their innocence from the beginning, were facing sentences of up to 42 years in prison.
During the trial, the defendants’ lawyer reiterated that the meeting was “consensual” and revealed that his strategy was based on a one-minute and 42-second video to support this claim.

The lawyer defending the Portuguese indicated that part of his courtroom strategy was based on a one minute and 42-second video, where the defense’s argument that the meeting was consensual is reinforced.
