A man, described as an elderly Portuguese national, barricaded himself in his apartment on Calle ses Violetes in the residential area and surrendered to police around 3:00 PM (2:00 PM Lisbon time).
The operation was led by the Guardia Civil, which dispatched a negotiator from Mallorca.
The barricaded man, reportedly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder due to the effects of war, does not speak Spanish, as stated by the Armed Forces.
The incident unfolded when a social worker came to assist him in the afternoon, and the man forced her to leave, violently stating his intention to commit suicide.
The woman alerted the Guardia Civil, who sent a patrol car. Upon arrival, the man opened the door, brandishing a revolver, later determined to be fake, and threatened to kill anyone who tried to stop his suicide attempt.
When the negotiator arrived, the man ignored them and did not answer the phone.
The officers managed to contact his granddaughter in Portugal and instructed her to tell him that a negotiator from the Guardia Civil had arrived from Mallorca to help him.
Persistently, the man agreed to speak with the negotiator through the door and, after a brief conversation, under the protection of officers from the Reserve and Security Group (GRS), he opened it, showing his hands.
The man was restrained without force and examined by paramedics before being transferred to Hospital Can Misses, where social services requested his admission to a residential unit and psychiatric treatment.
The operation involved the Guardia Civil’s Reserve and Security Group (GRS) and local police officers.
