Portuguese cinemas had in July the best month in gross revenues since records began in 2004 and the best month in number of spectators since August 2019, according to data released today by ICA.

According to July data released today by the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual (ICA), Portuguese cinemas recorded gross box office revenue of €10.5 million in July, 74.5% above the figures for the same month last year.

In the month of “Oppenheimer”, “Barbie” and the new chapter of “Mission Impossible”, 1.7 million spectators went to the cinema, 62.8% more than in July last year and a number on a scale that has not been reached since August 2019, pre-covid-19 pandemic, when 1.9 million people went to theaters.

According to data made available to Lusa by ICA, it is not possible to find a month with a gross box office revenue as high as that achieved in July this year, since computerized data have been collected, that is, since 2004.

For example, in August 2019, when more people went to the movies than in July this year, the revenue achieved was €10.125 million – incidentally, the only other time the €10 million barrier was exceeded in the data consulted up to 2004.
