Portuguese Cinematheque and Cinema Nimas dedicate screenings to actress Diane Keaton

The Diane Keaton cycle at Cinema Nimas begins on Friday, showcasing four films starring the actress and directed by Woody Allen. The cinema highlights on its official website that the actress and the director “together made the most beautiful films of their lives,” which will be featured until November 24.

The films are: “Manhattan” (1979), “Annie Hall” (1977), which earned Diane Keaton an Oscar for Best Actress, “Manhattan Murder Mystery” (1993), and “Interiors” (1978).

The “In Memoriam Diane Keaton” cycle at the Cinemateca starts on November 3 and includes the screening of two films starring Diane Keaton and one directed by her.

“Annie Hall,” “Morning Glory” (2010) by Roger Michell, and “Hanging Up” (2000) by Diane Keaton were the films selected by Cinemateca Portuguesa.

According to the official Cinemateca website, the cycle runs until November 28.

Diane Keaton passed away on October 11, at the age of 79, in the United States.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, Diane Keaton became popular in the 1970s as Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” trilogy and for her various roles in Woody Allen movies, including “Annie Hall,” for which she won an Oscar in 1977.

Though mainly known for cinema, she began her career in theater. After dropping out of college, she moved from Los Angeles to New York to start her professional acting career, adopting her mother’s maiden name, Keaton.

In 1968, she was part of the “Hair” cast on Broadway. Her next project, also on Broadway, was “Play It Again, Sam” by and with Woody Allen. The role, which premiered in 1969, earned her a Tony nomination.

During that time, the actress and the director began a relationship that lasted about three years. Additionally, they collaborated on eight films (“Play It Again, Sam,” “Sleeper,” “Love and Death,” “Annie Hall,” “Interiors,” “Manhattan,” “Radio Days,” and “Manhattan Murder Mystery”).

Diane Keaton’s screen debut was with “Lovers and Other Strangers” by Cy Howard, released in 1970.

However, it was two years later, in the role of Kay Adams, the girlfriend and later wife of mobster Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino, in Coppola’s “The Godfather” films, that she made an impact in Hollywood.

Although she only won one Oscar, she was nominated three more times in the Best Actress category: in 1982 for “Reds” by Warren Beatty, in 1997 for “Marvin’s Room” by Jerry Zaks, and in 2004 for “Something’s Gotta Give” by Nancy Meyers.

Her extensive filmography also includes films such as “Father of the Bride” I and II, “The First Wives Club,” “Hanging Up,” “Because I Said So,” “Darling Companion,” “And So It Goes,” “Love the Coopers,” “Hampstead,” and “Poms.”

Her most recent film role was in “Summer Camp,” released last year.

In a rare television appearance, she was one of the stars of the miniseries “The Young Pope” by Paolo Sorrentino, premiered in 2016. In 2021, she appeared in the music video for Justin Bieber’s song “Ghost.”

Not always in front of the camera, Diane Keaton debuted as a director in the 1980s, directing the music video for Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” She later directed episodes of television series such as “Twin Peaks,” “China Beach,” and “Pasadena,” other music videos, and the film “Hanging Up.”

Diane Keaton published three autobiographies: “Then Again” in 2011, “Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty” in 2015, and “Brother and Sister” in 2020. None have been translated into Portuguese.

In 1980, she also published “Reservations,” a photography book, a hobby she had pursued since the 1970s, and in 2022 “Saved: My Picture World,” a visual autobiography.

In a 2019 interview with People magazine, reflecting on her career, she said, “I know nothing and I have learned nothing. Aging hasn’t made me wiser. Without acting, I would have been a misfit.”

Diane Keaton was quite active on Instagram, where she had about 2.5 million followers.
