Only 32% of Portuguese consumers claim they make more spontaneous online purchases than they did two years ago, a decrease from 43% recorded in 2024.
Across Europe, the report similarly indicates a behavioral reversal: 30% of consumers report making more impulsive purchases than two years ago, significantly lower than the 45% found in the previous study.
Intrum associates this decline with the ongoing pressure on household budgets, driven by inflation, high living costs, and interest rates.
Social media, traditionally linked to impulsive buying, is also losing some influence.
In Portugal, 34% of consumers admit to making impulse purchases after exposure to advertising on these platforms, a figure identical to the European average. However, 76% of Portuguese consumers—above the 70% recorded in Europe—believe that social media creates unrealistic financial expectations.
The study also highlights the rising use of “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) options.
In Portugal, 31% of respondents are more inclined to buy when this option is available, slightly above the European average of 28%.
Intrum cautions against the risks associated with using this type of credit for non-essential expenses.
Amidst the major promotion period, the company emphasizes the importance of a more rational approach to shopping.
“Black Friday should be seen as an opportunity to save consciously rather than as an incentive for rampant consumption,” said Luís Salvaterra, General Director of Intrum Portugal, in a statement.
Intrum further advocates that addressing these challenges should involve consumers, businesses, and policymakers, calling for improved financial literacy, transparent business practices, and balanced payment solutions to mitigate the impact of impulsive consumption and excessive credit use.
