A 40-year-old Portuguese man has been sentenced to prison for the rape of a woman in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The perpetrator, identified as Caitano Azevedo, has been in preventive custody since his arrest.
The sentence will be announced on January 9, but it is clear that Azevedo will serve a prison sentence for the crime and will now be listed as a sex offender in Scotland.
The Crime
Azevedo denied in court the charges of assault and rape that occurred on October 22, 2023. However, the judge did not believe his testimony.
The attack began on King Street and continued into a vacant lot near Aberdeen’s sports area. During the trial, held at the High Court in Edinburgh, the judge heard the victim describe how Azevedo grabbed her hand and dragged her to an isolated spot, where he raped her.
After the guilty verdict, Azevedo’s lawyers requested his release on bail pending the sentencing next month. However, Judge Alistair Watson denied the request. Azevedo, who received assistance from an interpreter during the trial, will remain in preventive custody.
