A Portuguese national worker died last Saturday at a Goodyear tire factory in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg.
The deceased, aged 46, was originally from Leiria, Portugal, although he was born in France and lived there until the age of 16. About a decade ago, he decided to move to Luxembourg, where he currently resided with his wife and six-year-old daughter.
The incident has left the family devastated, raising numerous questions. Media outlets in Luxembourg, such as RTL, describe the death as “mysterious” since Goodyear has yet to release details regarding the accident.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our employees in Luxembourg this Saturday, March 29. We are cooperating with local authorities as part of the investigation. We offer our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues,” the company conveyed, according to reports.
The family expressed their deep frustration with the company, where the man had been employed for eight years in the tire quality control service.
“This is one of the largest tire manufacturing companies, and no one contacted the family. A human life cannot be disregarded like that. The police informed the wife of her husband’s death and gave her the human resources number to contact the company. I find it unacceptable. There are no words,” a cousin of the victim lamented.
“Unfortunately, the Luxembourg press is accustomed to not receiving information from the tire manufacturer following an incident, regardless of its severity,” RTL criticizes, adding that Goodyear has not only withheld information on the incident but also on “measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.”
Unofficial sources revealed to RTL that the accident transpired Saturday morning, shortly after 7 a.m., in a laboratory during a tire test. A bolt reportedly came loose and “flew” towards the victim’s head.
