An intoxicated Portuguese driver lost control of his vehicle on Saturday night, causing a chain collision involving five cars in Montreux, Vaud, Switzerland. One car was propelled into two pedestrians on the sidewalk, leaving one in critical condition.
The 34-year-old man was en route to Clarens when he collided with a parked vehicle, per a statement released by Vaud authorities on Sunday.
This vehicle, in turn, was pushed into two Chinese tourists—a 51-year-old mother and her 19-year-old son—both sustaining serious injuries. Police noted that the teenager is in a critical state with life-threatening injuries.
The victims received on-site medical assistance and were transported to the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Lausanne.
The Portuguese driver’s car also crashed into an oncoming vehicle, two parked cars, and a tree.
The man suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hospital Riviera-Chablais, while the other two drivers—a 35-year-old Turkish resident of Vaud-Chablais and a 24-year-old Greek resident in England—were unharmed.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an inquiry into the accident’s cause.
