‘Sabura’, a story of love that also addresses the theme of immigration, is the second short film by Falcão Nhaga, following his debut with ‘Mistida’ (2022), which was made in an academic setting.
The synopsis of ‘Sabura’ reveals the love story of a young couple “facing an uncertain future between Europe and Africa. When they reunite in Lisbon, sharing a house with other immigrants, distance and closeness will test their relationship.”
Produced by Bam Bam Cinema, the film stars Binete Undonque, Joãozinho da Costa, Amarjeet Mishra, and Mamadu Baio.
In a press release from distributor Portugal Film, Falcão Nhaga remarked that this Swedish award is “particularly moving, given that in the discussions about immigration, both in Portugal and around the world, it is evident that the values of humanization and truth are in crisis.”
Falcão Nhaga, 25, is the son of a Cape Verdean mother and a Guinean father and resides in the suburbs of Lisbon.
He studied at the School of Theatre and Cinema, where he made the short film ‘Mistida’, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received an award at the IndieLisboa festival.
At the Uppsala Short Film Festival, other Portuguese films were also featured, including ‘Cão Sozinho’ by Marta Reis Andrade, ‘Amarelo Banana’ by Alexandre Sousa, ‘Atom & Void’ by Gonçalo Almeida, and ‘2720’ by Basil da Cunha.
The Uppsala Short Film Festival concludes on Sunday.
