
According to the monthly cinema exhibition statistics released today by the ICA, Portuguese cinemas welcomed 4,525,468 spectators from January to May this year, marking a 13% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Box office revenues have reached 28.5 million euros, reflecting an increase of 16.5% (approximately four million euros) compared to the same period in 2024.
Portuguese films or those with national co-production, premiered this year, were watched by 48,449 spectators, accounting for 1.1% of the total market share. In terms of box office revenues, the share stands at 0.8%, totaling 228,000 euros.
Of the 172 films released in cinemas from January to May, only 44 (25.6%) were produced or co-produced by American companies, yet these films achieved the greatest success, exceeding a 67% share of the total exhibition in both box office revenues and audience numbers.
Focusing on the performance in May alone, this year saw a 27.4% increase in the number of spectators compared to 2024, totaling 852,584 entries, along with a 37% rise in box office revenues, amounting to 5.3 million euros.
This growth can be attributed to the ‘Cinema em Festa’ initiative, organized over three days in May by the Associação Portuguesa de Empresas Cinematográficas, which offered tickets at 3.5 euros in over 420 theaters.
This year, with data collected up to May, the most-watched film in cinemas was ‘Um Filme Minecraft’, directed by Jared Hess, with 498,120 viewers and three million euros in revenue.
The second most-watched film is “Ainda estou aqui”, directed by Walter Salles, with 383,829 entries and 2.4 million euros in box office revenue.
‘On Falling’, by Laura Carreira, is the most-watched Portuguese film this year, with 12,531 spectators and approximately 75,000 euros in revenue.
