Portuguese government expresses sorrow for the victims of the floods in South Asia.

More than 1,200 people have died due to floods and landslides that struck Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand last week, with hundreds still missing.

“The Portuguese government expresses deep condolences for the victims of the devastating floods affecting South Asia, particularly Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. All solidarity to the affected populations and the authorities of these friendly countries,” stated a note released today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Facebook.

The death toll from the floods and landslides in Indonesia has risen to 631, with one million displaced, according to a report released today by the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency.

Furthermore, 472 people remain missing and 2,600 were injured in three provinces of the island of Sumatra, which has a population exceeding 20 million, the agency added.

The agency reported that over 3.3 million people have been affected by the floods, with one million evacuated to temporary shelters.

In Sri Lanka, floods and landslides have caused at least 410 deaths and affected nearly 1.5 million people, according to a new report released today by the Disaster Management Center (DMC) of Sri Lanka.

This is the worst natural disaster in the country since 2017 when floods and landslides killed more than 200 people.

In Thailand, where at least 176 residents have died in one of the worst floods in a decade, authorities continue to distribute aid to tens of thousands displaced and repair the damage, while in Malaysia, floods submerging large areas of Perlis state resulted in two deaths.
