“Portuguese language owes much” to Ana Paula Tavares, says minister

“Congratulations, Ana Paula Tavares, on the Camões Prize 2025! Beyond the well-deserved recognition of your work as a poet and historian, it is a tribute to your continuous reflection on various cultural universes and the condition of women. The Portuguese language owes you much!” wrote the Portuguese government official on the social network X, who announced the prize to the writer.

Editorial Caminho also celebrated the awarding of the Camões Prize to the Angolan writer and professor Ana Paula Tavares, highlighting her as an “indispensable reference in the Portuguese language space.”

Angolan poet and historian Ana Paula Tavares, author of an extensive literary body of work in prose, poetry, and scientific texts, has won the Camões Prize 2025, announced today by the General Directorate of Books, Archives, and Libraries (DGLAB).

The awarding of the Camões Prize 2025 to Ana Paula Tavares honors “her fruitful and coherent trajectory of aesthetic creation and, in particular, her dignified rescue of Poetry,” stated the jury in a communiqué released by DGLAB today.

“The Jury emphasized that, with the diction of her uncompromising lyricism and the free commitments of production in chronicles and narrative fiction, Ana Paula Tavares’ work also gains significant anthropological dimension from a historical perspective,” the statement read.

The winner was decided today in a meeting that brought together all the jury members: poet and researcher Ana Mafalda Leite (Portugal), writer and professor José Carlos Seabra Pereira (Portugal), essayist, professor, and literary critic Francisco Noa (Mozambique), historian and professor Arno Wehling (Brazil), professor Maria Lucia Santaella Braga (Brazil), and poet and literary critic Lopito Feijóo (Angola).

Ana Paula Tavares’ bibliography, which began to take shape post-independence of Angola, is extensive and multifaceted, with Caminho having published a collected poetry volume in 2023, to which an original book named “Água Selvagem” was added.
