Portuguese man murdered in his restaurant in Germany. Suspect detained

A 50-year-old Portuguese man was murdered on Monday, October 20. Paulo Pereira was found dead in his own restaurant, ‘La Piazzetta’, a pizzeria in Rheinfelden, Germany, having been fatally stabbed.

The man and his wife, who is also Portuguese, are immigrants in Germany but originally come from Viseu.

On social media, Paulo Pereira’s wife posted a simple black background image. In white, it reads “Mourning husband.” Between the two words is a heart with an incorporated infinity symbol.

German media report that, citing the Lörrach Prosecutor’s Office and Freiburg police, several searches were conducted in the city throughout the day to locate the crime suspect. A police operation also took place in the square in front of the restaurant to find the weapon used in the attack.

It was only the following day, Tuesday night, that authorities found the suspect hiding in an apartment and detained him at the scene.

The alleged attacker is a former employee of the victim, of Afghan nationality, and 28 years old. As of now, the motive behind the suspect’s attack on Paulo Pereira is unknown.

The man has already appeared before a judge this Wednesday, and it was decided that he would await trial in custody.
