Portuguese man o’ war continues to be spotted (from Marinha Grande to Madeira)

Weeks after the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a warning about the strong presence of, these organisms continue to appear prominently on Portuguese beaches.

IPMA shared a warning from the GelAvista observatory on Wednesday, which assessed the situation on Sunday.

“This week, the Portuguese man-of-war continued to be sighted. We received reports from the municipalities of Vila Real de Santo António to Marinha Grande, as well as in the Madeira archipelago,” the notice stated, noting the sighting of other similar organisms.

In their communication, the observatory also noted that “the by-the-wind sailor (species ‘Velella velella’) is also being sighted in the same locations in large numbers, with one particularly impressive sighting at sea off Cabo Carvoeiro.”
