Portuguese museologists candidates for the International Council of Museums

The candidates from Portugal for key positions in the International Council of Museums (ICOM) include Luís Raposo, contending for vice-presidency, and Joana Sousa Monteiro for a regular member seat on the Executive Council.

The elections for the Executive and Advisory Councils of ICOM International are scheduled during the upcoming triennial general assembly in Dubai, set for November.

Luís Raposo has served as a regular member of the ICOM Executive Council since 2022. His past leadership roles include president of ICOM Portugal (2008-2012) and ICOM Europe (2016-2022).

The Portuguese archaeologist and historian, who managed the National Museum of Archaeology from 1996 to 2012, is campaigning for the vice-presidency of ICOM. His candidacy has the backing of various national and international committees, including ICOM Europe, ICOM Africa, and ICOM Arab, along with ICOM Portugal.

Joana Sousa Monteiro, a historian and museologist directing the Museum of Lisbon, has co-managed the ICOM Strategic Plan Committee since 2022. Her previous roles include presiding over the International Committee for City Museums (2016-2022) and serving as secretary of the ICOM Portugal board (2014-2016).

The Portuguese section of the international organization views the dual candidacies as a testament to the international recognition of the professionalism, diligence, and commitment of Portuguese professionals to ICOM’s values and mission.

The contenders for the presidency of ICOM International are Nathalie Bondil from ICOM France, Inkyung Chang from ICOM Korea, Antonio Rodríguez from ICOM USA, and Terry Simioti Nyambe from ICOM Zambia.
