The online application is available for “attorneys, registered with the Bar Association and the Order of Solicitors and Execution Agents”, and for the time being only in one specific type.

Lawyers and solicitors can now submit online applications for Portuguese nationality for adults who have been legally residing in Portugal for at least five years or are married to Portuguese nationals, the Ministry of Justice announced this Monday.

“The service, launched on February 17, exclusively for professionals, allows, in a totally dematerialized way, to submit nationality requests together with the mandatory documentation, make payments, follow the status of the processes, complete and correct information without the need to go to a Registry office,” reads a statement from the Ministry of Justice (MJ) sent to the press.

The request, available to legal representatives registered with the Portuguese Bar Association or the Order of Solicitors and Enforcement Agents, can be submitted through the Justice Portal.

“In the initial phase, the service covers applications from citizens over 18 years old who wish to obtain Portuguese nationality by legal residence in Portugal for at least five years and by marriage to a person of Portuguese nationality. Progressively, by March 17, the service will be extended to all types of nationality requests,” the Ministry of Justice explained in a statement.

According to the government, the feature available since February 17 is intended to make the process more streamlined.
