The Portuguese Navy monitored the passage of a Russian naval force, consisting of a frigate and a refueling ship, which crossed maritime areas of national interest in the last 24 hours.
In a statement released today, the Navy said that this operation monitored the frigate Neustrashimy and the refueling ship Yelnya, which crossed maritime areas of national interest and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Azores, heading for the Caribbean.
The Maritime Operations Center coordinated with the Azores Maritime Zone Command the use of the ocean patrol vessel Sines, which began monitoring at dawn on Saturday.
This monitoring, which took place in the extreme northwest of the Azorean EEZ, ended this morning and lasted for more than 24 hours, said the Navy, which, through these monitoring and surveillance actions, “guarantees the defense and security of maritime spaces under national sovereignty, jurisdiction or responsibility”.
These operations, according to the statement, also contribute to the protection of Portugal’s interests and its critical infrastructures and ensure compliance with the international commitments made within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance (NATO).
