The Portuguese Navy accompanied a Russian ship from Thursday until today during its passage through the continent’s Exclusive Economic Zone, and no irregular activity was detected, that branch of the Armed Forces announced in a statement.
In order to “ensure efficient surveillance of activity in Portuguese waters”, the monitoring of this Russian ship, which is bound for the Mediterranean Sea, was carried out by the Portuguese Republic ships D. Francisco de Almeida and Figueira da Foz.
“The mission was carried out normally, and the ship made the transit without any irregular activity being detected,” the Navy said.
As part of the daily monitoring of the Navy’s Maritime Operations Center and the commitment of naval units, the two Portuguese ships “accompanied a Russian-flagged general cargo merchant ship from Ekonomiya, Arkhangelsk, Russia”.
“The Navy will continue to fulfill its mission of monitoring maritime spaces under national sovereignty or jurisdiction, accompanying the passage of these ships, in order to guarantee the safeguard and defense of national interests at sea,” it can also be read.
